Religious Trauma Therapy

Religious Trauma Feels...

Alone. Confusing. Shameful. Guilty. Angry. Abusive. Frightening.

While most trauma experiences stem from a traumatic incident or group of incidents, religious trauma arises out of an ongoing period of indoctrination into a variety of toxic beliefs.

Typically, symptoms begin to manifest as an individual undergoes a period of religious deconstruction, where long held beliefs are challenged and changed. For some, this may lead to a happier, healthier way of engaging spirituality. For others, this may mean abandoning faith entirely.

The process, however, can be a difficult road to travel. Common areas of struggle include:

  • Ongoing fear of hell
  • Re-experiencing grief
  • Fear of “losing heaven”
  • Shame
  • Self-loathing and sense of sinfulness
  • Loneliness
  • Isolation from a faith community

Because this is such a complex issue, it requires a specialized method of treatment.

Our Approach

I was a pastor and religious educator for 15 years before undergoing my own religious deconstruction. I know the struggle. I want to help you realize the fullness of who you can be when you break free to discover the freedom and joy that awaits you.

At Tempest Counseling, we combine a collection of evidence-based approaches that are grounded in science, not faith, to specifically address the unique needs of religious trauma. This includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as a core element. CBT allows us to explore deep-seated negative core beliefs, learn how to identify them, and provide a system to help challenge and transform them into healthy, rational, reality-based core beliefs.

While CBT forms the core of the Tempest approach, we also incorporate anxiety-reduction techniques grounded in mindfulness, as well as a safe environment for exploration rooted in the person-centered methods of Carl Rogers. Individually, every one of these approaches are among the top evidence-based treatments in the field. Together, they allow a powerful approach to treating and recovering from religious trauma.
